  1. The assertion of Forbes is ridiculous. The only persons who know for sure how much influence the queen has are herself and the now many prime ministers who have served her during her nearly sixty year reign.

However, it is reasonable to speculate that is goes deeper than most Americans would think on the surface. She has several powerful psychological advantages going in to each new relationship with a prime minister. 1st she is the QUEEN, in a very class conscious society. She is the face on the currency, which should never be underestimated. She is surrounded by opulance another psychological advantage. She has to be informed of everything the government does-so there is no hiding anything you do from her. Every department of government and armed services is referred to as Her Majesties…… and on and on.

  2. Thank you for your comments. I haven't linked directly to the Forbes article because the Forbes site (for some reason) says not to do that, but it says they've decided to redefine "power" as influence, including cultural influence/being talked about, and that they consider this power fleeting. I find this condescending to women — or, if Forbes is going to draw up their other lists the same way(?!), condescending to their readers in general.

Lady Gaga isn't the head of a church or any state, can't declare war, pardon crimes, travel without a passport, the list goes on… she is popular right now, but the Queen is powerful. There is a difference.

And, as you pointed out, the Queen is everywhere, even on money. Her cultural impact is so great that it's easy to take for granted, but I would be surprised if she isn't the most famous woman in the world. (Would there even be a Lady Gaga without Madonna?)
