The world is searching for royalty

Google has published its annual Zeitgeist report, analyzing "over one trillion queries to showcase what the world searched for" in 2012. And yes, the world is searching for information about royalty — or one particular royal person, anyway.

For the year, the world's sixth most popular trending search query (defined as a "query with the highest amount of traffic over a sustained period in 2012 as compared to 2011") was Kate Middleton. Worldwide, the #2 trending query related to an event was Kate Middleton Pictures Released. And #2 on the worldwide Trending People list was, that's right, Kate Middleton.

Google's Most Searched lists differ from the Trending search lists because Most Searched reflects simply "search queries with the largest volume of searches." For the UK, the most-searched-for royal family members were:

  1. Queen Elizabeth
  2. Kate Middleton
  3. Prince Harry
  4. Prince Charles
  5. Prince William
  6. Prince Philip
  7. Lupo
  8. Prince Andrew
  9. Prince Edward
  10. Zara Phillips

(Lupo is the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's pet dog.)
